☆ Special Abilities/Powers: Subaru is the 13th head of the Sumeragi clan of Onmyouji. He does his job by exorcizing demons, helping lost souls, and entering the minds of comatose people to help them return to the real world. He is able to create a kekkai, a spiritual barrier that can surround an area during battle; it saves all of the buildings and people within from actually being harmed. He can also summon a shikigami; his is a three-headed, white crow.
☆Timeline: During X/1999, right after he is blinded in his right eye.
☆ Character's Personality: Subaru is very selfless, rarely ever putting his own needs or wants above those of others. He was once a cheerful but bashful young man, but ever since he was betrayed, his personality made a big change. He is now a quiet, fairly serious individual, though he is still willing to help those that need it.
☆ Character's Background: Subaru was born in Kyoto, the younger boy of a pair of fraternal twins; his older sister was named Hokuto. Though both siblings gained some of the Onmyouji's power, Subaru's were obviously stronger, and at the age of nine he was separated from his sister for one year. He underwent intense training, until the day he was to surpass his grandmother as the head of the clan. On that day, he was left alone beneath a blooming sakura tree, where he met a strange teenage student.

The young man asked if he knew why the sakura blossoms were tinted pink; he then told Subaru the legend that sakura petals, which originally grow white, turn red because of a fresh corpse buried beneath. Being the caring young child that he was, Subaru asked the other boy if the person beneath the tree was in any pain. The stranger seemed shocked, but then decided to make a bet with the smaller boy; a bet that, because of the rushing wind, Subaru couldn't hear the entirety of.

"If we ever meet again..."

"...But today... I will let you go."

Subaru would dream of that day often over the following years, unable to remember anything past those brief whispered words. When he returned to his grandmother, she immediately gloved his hands, placing a spell over the gloves to make sure they were never removed. He was told that he should never let anyone see his hands, even if they were fellow members of the clan and they begged him. The small boy didn't understand why, but obeyed his grandmother anyway.

At 16 he lived in an apartment building along with his twin, who had grown up to be his complete opposite; she was loud and fun, friendly and outgoing. But still, they got along perfectly.

It was at that time that Subaru met the friendly veterinarian Seishirou Sakurazuka. Seishirou was also a magic-user and Onmyouji. They quickly became friends, and Hokuto decided that the two were meant to be together. Seishirou often teased the younger boy and claimed to love him. It usually flustered the small Onmyouji, which only caused his friend and sister to tease him more.

It wasn’t until a year later, when Seishirou lost his right eye protecting Subaru from an armed attacker, that Subaru realized he was in love with the older man.

Unfortunately, a bet was scheduled to be settled at that time. While visiting Seishirou in the hospital, he was pulled into an illusion similar to that day 7 years ago, beneath a blooming sakura tree. He found out that the student he had met there had been Seishirou, who had wiped most of his memory directly after their encounter. Subaru watched as their younger selves reenacted that day, finally hearing the bet made between them, and noticing the small, dead girl beside the older man’s feet.

Seishirou, as suspected by Hokuto, was a member of the Sakurazukamori, a clan of dark Onmyouji using their powers to kill, sacrificing their victims to the sakura trees. Seishirou grew to be emotionless, not knowing the difference between love and hate, or how human life differed in value from that of a useless object. On that day he had marked the backs of Subaru’s hands with inverted stars; a sign that he was prey for the Sakurazukamori. He plans to give Subaru to the sakura tree, and proceeds to torture him, telling Subaru that he doesn’t feel anything for him.

Before Subaru can be sacrificed, his grandmother breaks the illusion, leaving her crippled as a result. Subaru, devastated, enters into a comatose state, not eating or talking to anyone. Hokuto feels she is to blame, and decides to leave with Subaru’s Onmyouji outfit to hunt down Seishirou.

Subaru finally wakes up from his coma when he senses his twin has sacrificed her life to save him. With her last breath, she sets a spell over Subaru to try to protect him from the Sakurazukamori.

At the age of 25, Subaru becomes a Dragon of Heaven, sworn to protect humanity, despite the fact that he really doesn’t care about the fate of the human race. He only cares about revenge for his sister, and continuing his job as head of the Sumeragi clan.

Since he still felt guilty about Seishirou’s injured eye, the head of the Dragons of Earth read Subaru’s hidden wish to be that he wanted to lose his right eye, too. He grants that wish, jabbing his fingers into Subaru’s right eye and causing him to lose sight in it.
